Piano Rebuilding -
Teardown : After inspection the piano is completely disassembled . Strings, plate, block, pins, action are removed. Kiln Dried : All remaining components, including all case parts, soundboard (still in the piano) and bridges are placed in a drying room where the moisture content is lowered to an optimum level for remanufacturing and repair.
Case Stripping : After the moisture content is brought down, the piano and all its case parts are thoroughly stripped and prepared to accept primer and the final finish coat.
Light Wood Sanding : Many pianos have slight indentations, cracks, worn edges / corners and other imperfections. Our sanding process fills in and repairs these flaws, making for a flat surface ready for primer and finish.
Plate Stripped : After being inspected for cracks and verification of structural stability, the plate is completely stripped and prepared for primer.Case Primer : In order to accept the multiple coats of lacquer and finish applied to the piano, all case parts are coated with a special primer designed to accept the finish properly.
Case Refinished : We use only the highest quality finishing materials, including lacquer, polyurethane and polyester. You can pick the final finish color, or let us make a recommendation based on the veneer’s grain and style (once the original finish is stripped). After the color and finish have been applied and allowed to dry properly, each piano is then meticulously hand rubbed to gain the optimum sheen.
Plate Primed : In order to obtain a good color and appearance, the plate must also be thoroughly primed in order to accept the final color and lacquer finish.
New Pin Block and Pins : Each piano receives a new custom made Delignit 15-ply pinblock cut specifically for the piano and to original factory specifications. The block is then drilled and the new pins driven into place once the plate is installed.
New Bridges / Bridge Repair : The bridge is one of the most essential elements of good piano tone. Each bridge is thoroughly inspected and either repaired or replaced to original factory specifications. If the bridge is in excellent shape, then no repair or replacement will be necessary.
Soundboard Repaired : Each soundboard, after being properly dried, is thoroughly inspected for crown and condition. Seams or cracks are routed out and a new piece of spruce laid in. We even go to the extent of re-graining and staining to attempt to match the original board’s color and appearance. Of course our number one concern is tonal reproduction, and soundboards can be replaced if necessary. In addition to board repair, we also make all necessary repairs and adjustments to the ribs. Ribs are repaired and re-glued prior to repairing any cracks or seams.
New Strings : Each piano receives a completely new set of custom made strings. Both the treble and bass strings are replaced.
New Action Parts : The decision to replace action parts is determined by the condition in which they arrive at our factory or by customer request. Generally, a good number of action components will be replaced.
New Hammers / Shanks and Flanges : Each piano receives new hammers as well as new shanks and flanges. Each set is laid in place carefully and designed to match the original factory specifications. The standard set (Imagedawa/Tokiwa) c
New Keytops : Most pianos receive a new set of white keytops. Each set is custom cut for the specific piano, thoroughly buffed and beveled. Ebonys are also replaced or refinished when necessary.
New Bushings : Key and action bushings are replaced unless they are deemed in excellent shape prior to work
New or Refinished Hardware : All the hardware is cleaned, buffed or polished to look new.
Logo / Label Replacement : One of the final touches to any rebuild is the reapplication of all soundboard and fallboard logos, lettering and serial numbers to the action and plate.
All are replaced to match the original lettering and stenciling. While these activities are a minor part of the work, they provide a major part of the visual pleasure!
Tuning / Voicing : In addition to a basic chip tuning when the strings are installed, each piano will be tuned at least 4 times and thoroughly voiced prior to preparation for delivery to your home.
